Trick or Treat

Happy Halloween everyone! It's all treats and no tricks around here today. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I've never been big on dressing up, mostly because I always leave my costume to the very last minute. But pumpkin carving and watching old scary movies with my family is one of the things I look forward to all year. I've also been looking forward to sharing this cake with you! Halloween themed cakes are always fun to decorate, especially when they can be "cute" rather than "scary".

The only direction as far as decorating goes, was Halloween themed, and Goofy and Max on top. I thought it would be fun to have Goofs dressed up for the occasion, so they I gave them some spooky costumes.

Another thing that I love about this cake is the stripes on the middle tier. I hand painted them on, to give them an imperfect and slightly spooky look.

Hope you all have a fantastic Halloween!

Sunday Sweets

Since I've started posting cakes multiple times during the week, Sunday Sweets is now going to feature my favorite cake of the week. For the past few years our shop has had the opportunity to donate a cake to be auctioned off the raise money for the Boys and Girls Club. The fundraisers theme this year was pirates! Much better than the sports theme last year. I can't take total credit for the cake, it was definitely a team effort. I got to decorate the chest, and paint the cake board like a treasure map. The gold coins and jewels are one of my favorite things about the cake. No chest is complete without treasure!

Birthday Girl

Happy Birthday Mum!

Yesterday was my lovely mothers birthday! Unfortunately she doesn't share mine, or my dad's enthusiasm for presents. Or if she does, she's not as vocal about it as we are. In any case, buying presents for her can be difficult. Lucky for me, no birthday is complete without cake, and cake is what I do best. I didn't want to do anything to garish or bright for her cake, I wanted it to be simple and elegant, just like her.

I wanted the flowers to have the effect of lace, and I added a little brooch, just for a little bling.

Hope you know how much I love you Mum!

Do You Want Fries With That?

Making cake look like another type of food is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to cake decorating. There's something extra specially fun about it. After making a pizza cake, and a gravy packet, a hamburger was obviously the next logical food of choice. Not a salad in sight at Crazy Cakes, we're all about the good, greasy stuff. And no burger is complete without fries, and ketchup of course!

Oh, and a note to the smarty pants 15 year old at the A&W drive through yesterday, when I said I wanted my Teen Burger plain, I didn't mean just a plain bun with nothing else in it!

There's a saying that says the eyes are the window to the soul. If that's true, that makes your eyebrows the curtains to the windows of your soul. You don't want your eyebrows to look like cheap curtains you got in the clearance rack. One of the cardinal sins when it comes to the eyebrows is over plucking. If you over tweeze your brow hairs for long enough, they wont grow back! What's that you say? You don't think your brows are all that important? Think again my friends.

See? They really do make the difference! In no way do I consider myself a brow expert. But the lovely ladies over here have a fantastic guide to shaping and filling your brows.

Ahoy Matey!

I've come across a lot of strange cake themes these past few year. Twice in the past two weeks we've had customers that have wanted their cakes to be "as bizarre as possible". What does that even mean?Bizarre is such a relative term. I think that using green and orange together is bizarre, but there's lot of people out there that think that's a perfectly acceptable color combination. Needless to say, these customers got some bizarre polka dots. But then there's those blessed customers that come with ideas that I love. Like the lovely folks that ordered these! Nothing says fun like pirates!

No pirate is complete with a treasure chest full of gold

These guys are my favorite, and were for the top of cupcakes. I couldn't decide which style of mustache was most pirate like, so I decided to give them all varying degrees of facial hair. You'd be surprised at all the image results that come up when you google "types of mustaches"

A Night in Paris

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and this week we were lucky enough to be able to take part in a fundraiser to raise money for this awesome cause. The 'Night in Paris' themed party was girl's only, and was so much fun to design a cake for. The party had a chic black, white and pink color scheme, one of my favorite color palates to work with. The themed, the colors, and a great cause was a recipe for success, and I'm in love with the end results.

Space Issues

These days, it seems like everyone thinks they can decorate cakes. Which is true I suppose. But not everyone can decorate cakes WELL. Honestly people, it's tougher than it looks. There's a few techniques in birthday cake decorating that take time and practice to master. One of the hardest is piping. Specifically, piping words, basically writing in icing. It's harder than it looks, trust me. Sometimes things just go wrong. Here are a few of the most common problems.

Sometimes, you just run out of room
But this smart cookie soldiered on and just kept going!

Or, there's the common Nose Dive
This is when all you think to yourself, "It's not that crooked, no one will notice".

The Cliff Hanger
The a and y in birthday slipped, and just couldn't seem to hang on

Second Time's a Charm
If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

And my personal favorite
The Stop, and Walk Away
When things start to head south fast, sometimes it's best to just walk away

See, look at all the things that can go awry!

Sunday Sweets

What a crazy busy week. We had 35 cakes and almost 100 dozen cupcakes for Saturday alone. Toooo much cake. But it's Thanksgiving weekend, and I'm looking forward to a few days off, turkey and pumpkin pie. Here is a few of my favorites this week.

This was such a fun wedding cake to make. The bride was a total girly girl, and the groom was a macho heavy duty mechanic. So we compromised on the cake, with hot pink and nuts, bolts and gears. I'm in love with how it turned out.

Ruffles! Ruffles remain one of my favorite cakes of all time. I dusted the ruffles with several different shades of ivory luster dust, and I'm so sad that the picture doesn't pick up on the shimmer. But I think it's pretty cute notheless.

A fun dino birthday cake. And what birthday dino is complete without a birthday hat and a cupcake? Along with some complementary polka dots.

This was a fun little cake to make for one of our regular customers. She always orders a large cappuccino and a pink cupcake. When she ordered her cake she told us we could do whatever we wanted, and this is what we came up with.

Mator! Usually I'm not a fan of making cakes based on characters from movies. But Mator was fun, and I think he turned out pretty well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sunday Sweets

I can't believe October is already here! It's one of my favorite months because there's so many things to look forward to. Thanksgiving, beautiful fall weather, and Halloween of course! I can taste the pumpkin pie already! It was another busy week of cakes and there was a bunch of fun ones. Here's a few of my favorites!

This was a cute little cake for a special one year old who loves animals. We went with a woodland theme and I think it turned out super cute.

A close up of a few of my favorite animals. A cute little doe, complete with heart shaped spots

A little squirrel, complete with a glittery one, and an acorn.

And what first birthday is complete without a smash cake for the birthday girl. I thought a little hedgehog would be appropriate. With a pink bow of course.

It seems like every week I get to make a birthday monkey. This little monkey was lucky enough to get a birthday cupcake AND some bananas. Lucky guy.

This cake makes me so excited for Halloween. Decorating this monster was a blast.

I'm sad that pictures only show one side of the cake, because this cake was so cute, and needed to be seen from all side. It was for a little girl who was having a baking themed birthday party. So her cake was adorned with cakes, cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies.
