Flower Garden

It's been so long! Life has been crazy, and so has work. We're in full fledged wedding season at the shop, with 7 or 8 wedding cakes every weekend, in addition to our usual 20 or so cakes. So much for summer being relaxing hey? This cake is from this last weekend, and it turned out pretty darn good. A little much for my personal taste, but beautiful nonetheless. Enjoy!

The bottom tier is completely covered in handmade sugar flowers. Yep, those are all edible! We kept the rest of the cake relatively simple, with simple dots, and hand piped strings of pearls, with gold ribbon accents.

Cake!

I mentioned before that I was working on something that I was really excited about. Well here it is! I had to opportunity to work on cakes that will be used in an advertisement in a national wedding magazine. A daunting task, but a challenge that I was definitely up to. It will be in the fall/winter issue, so our color palate was on the darker side. A little bit disappointing because pastels are my favourite colors to work with. Nonetheless I'm really proud of how they turned out. All the cakes were inspired by different fabrics, from the ruffles, to the lace design (which took 3 hours to do. 3 hours, for one tier!), to the flower rosettes and buttons. So without further adieu...

These beautiful pictures were taken by the lovely Monica Chapman, who is an amazing photographer, and total sweetheart! It's times like these when I'm proud to say that I'm a cake decorator!

Sneak Preview

Just a little preview of something exciting that I'm working on!

Mustache

Sometimes it's sad how long it takes me to post things. This I made this cake for my brother's 13th birthday, which was end of March... Better late than never right? It's also sad that cakes for my family are usually cakes that get done in the last 10 minutes of the day, when I've already worked 12 hours and have no creativity or brain power left. That's the case with this little cake, but I think it still turned out pretty cute. Justin and I have a running inside joke with mustaches, and their growing popularity over the past year, so I thought it only appropriate to put some on his birthday cake!

I can't believe you're 13 already Justin! Love you lots and lots!

Happy Easter!

Hope the Easter Bunny found all of you this weekend!

Tuesdays...

This is how I feel about work this week. This is pretty much the only cake I feel like decorating. I've got a bad case of the Tuesdays....

Miss Daisy

This little cutie is my niece Daisy. Isn't she a doll? Well she just turned two, and I took the opportunity to combine all my favorite things. Pink, ruffles, sparkle, polka dots and bows. Allll on one cake! Luckily Daisy is a girl after my own heart and likes all those things too!

The birthday girl blowing out the candles.

And this is the face you get when you take a bite of her ice cream without asking. Too cute!
I love you Daisy girl!

Seeing Spots

I'll admit that this cake took a lot out of me. Originally I planned on doing something that involved leopard print, but I just wasn't feeling it. Which is crazy, because anyone that knows me at all knows that I love leopard print on anything, at any time. It didn't turn out exactly as I wanted, I didn't have enough time to put as much work into as I would have liked. Even so, I think the finished product is pretty cute.

Chance of Showers

Display cakes are normally one of my favorite things to do, it means I get total creative freedom. Which is generally a great thing. But this week I've come down with a cold, and I feel like my head is full of fluff, which makes being creative extremely hard. So when I was contemplating what to do for bridal shower themed display cakes, one of the designs I went with was pretty literal. Nonetheless I love how it turned out. It's hard to go wrong with polka dots, bows, and a few heart shaped raindrops!

Have a great weekend!

Man Stuff

The majority of the cakes that I decorate are girl oriented. Pink, sparkly birthday cakes, or elegant wedding cakes. For the most part I've shied away from boyish cakes. Not because I can't do them, but because girly is what I like, and what I do best. But every once in a while I put the sparkles away and tackle a "manly cake". This would be one of them. I was excited to have the chance to recreate this backhoe, very similar to some of the equipment in my dad's arsenal of machinery.

Have a great weekend!

Lazy Sunday

It's Sunday afternoon, probably my favorite time of the whole week. I'm due for a nap, so I'll keep it short! I thought I'd share the finished button cake! Buttons are cute in their simplicity, and are quickly becoming one of my favorite cake design elements.

 Have a great weekend!

Who's Got the Button

Who's got the button? I do, let me tell ya! This weekend is the City and Baby Trade Show here in my nick of the woods, and we got ourselves a table! We also had the chance to make a little something for the giveaway bags. We decided to go with a "cute as a button theme" for the whole event, which included 300 mini button sugar cookies. That's a lot of cookies people, see for yourself!

Cookies as far as the eye can see! I also made a display cake to match, sticking with the button theme. Here's a little sneak peak of the cake!

Pictures of the final product tomorrow! If you're in the Lethbridge area, be sure to check out the trade show, there's going to be tons and tons of awesome vendors!

Big This Year

I'm feeling very uninspired this morning. I forgot to close my bedroom door last night, and my little brother's cat kept me up all night. You'll pay for that Zoey. Anyway, I'll just get to the cake, because it's a good one. Owls are big this year people. I decorate at least 2 owl cakes every week, but this is my favorite to date.

As always, the pictures aren't nearly as cute. Branches with pastel leaves, a big pink bow, hard to go wrong.

Not only an owl, but an owl with a pink bow, sitting in a sparkly nest!

Happy Monday!

Something Blue

I'm happy to say that I've made a full recovery from all the Valentines madness. It was nothing an all girls weekend shopping trip couldn't cure! I was lucky enough to get a few days off work to do some shopping with my mum and sister. 5 pairs of shoes later, and I think this shopping trip can be chalked up to a success!
On another note, I loooove today's cake, but I'm super sad that I don't have better pictures. It's gorgeous in person, if I do say so in myself. It's a pale Tiffany blue, with shimmery white damask on the middle layer. I also added pale coral ruffled flowers that didn't make it in the picture. It's the last of my fancy display cakes!

Have a lovely holiday weekend!

Happy Valentines Day!

Our busiest day of the year is over and done with! And I couldn't be more glad! I'm more tired than I've been in a long time, but it feels good to have made it through the past two days. Yesterday included a full day of Valentines prep, including decorating sugar cookies for 6 hours. Do you know how many cookies that is people?! A lot. And we sold em all. Then I had the chance to go babysit my niece and nephew so my sister and brother in law could have a night on the town. I can't get enough of those kids. Last but not least, today involved a lot of cake.  We baked and sold over 2000 cupcakes, and helped over 200 customers, not bad huh? Needless to say, I'm pooped, but I thought I'd share a few Valentines photos!

Busy at work making Valentines for Mom and Dad!

Me and my 2 favorite kids

The typical hearts and flowers valentines cake gets old after a while, so when I have the chance I like to switch things up a little bit, like with these cute little robots

Which means a lot coming from me, because I realllly love cake.

Hope you all have a Valentines filled with love!

Ruffles and Lace

It's been a long week. A very long week. It's been full of preschool tours, ridiculous customers, including a few that have been blacklisted (Yes, that means you Bev!) and Valentines Day preparations. Valentines Day has always been one of my favorite commercial holidays, regardless if I have a significant other or not.  It's full of pink and red and flowers and hearts, and of course, cake! I'll def have some fun things to share. In the mean time, here's another of the display cakes from the wedding show. This one was inspired by a gorgeous dress we saw in a wedding magazine. Ruffles and lace, my two favorite things!

Have a great weekend!

Lighten Up

Keeping up on wedding trends is extremely important when you're in the wedding cake business. Colors, patterns and textures are all important when designing a wedding cake to compliment the rest of your wedding decor. The past few years, color palates have leaned towards darker shades, deep purples, teals and blacks and white. I have nothing against dark colors, but when decorating, personally I tend to lean towards lighter shade. When designing new display cakes for this seasons wedding shows, we decided lighten things up a bit. This cake in particular features one of my all time favorite color combos. Grey is such a misunderstood color. When paired with pastel hues like Tiffany blue, or pale pink it can be stunning! I hope you think so too!

Topsy turvy designs are unconventional for weddings, but we thought it'd be a fun change. I love it when people are willing to take chances and move away from the super traditional cakes.

I love ruffled flowers. Love. Them.

Expect more display cakes in the coming days! There's a few that I think you'll looove!

Over the Top Pretty?

It's days like today that really stink. When you get home from work, and it feels like it should be Friday, but then you stop and think, and realize that it's only Tuesday... It's also cakes like this that stink. The ones that people complain about until you offer to redo it so it meets their standards. The only thing I had to go off of when decorating this cake was "over the top pretty". What does that even mean? You're guess is as good as mine. Which means you're not very good at guessing either, because the lady that ordered this cake was not impressed the first time around. Dots and a ruffled flower were not enough for her. She need more ruffled flowers, bows, jewels and glitter. I'm not opposed to any of those things, except when it's the very end of the day, and I have to stay late to make them.

Is that over the top enough for you?

Owl Always Love You...

These past few months, my little penguin cake, seen here was a hit at the shop. So we thought we'd roll with it, and have another themed cake for the upcoming month. February is fast approaching, which means Valentines Day! I'm not sure any particular animal screams Valentines Day, but one of my favorite animals to make in cake form are owls. Super cute and versatile.

I'm sure this be the first little owl of many!

Twins!

Happy Monday! I am thoroughly enjoying being lazy on my day off, my first lazy day in a week or two. On this lazy Monday I thought I'd share a couple of cute little cakes.
Gender reveal cakes are always super fun, because that means we are the first one's to know the gender of the baby that a couple is having! This case was extra special, because the couple was expecting twins! No matter who it is that's expecting a baby, I always hope the baby is a girl. Always. So I was super excited when I found out that both babies were girls! So fun! I had complete creative freedom, but had to keep in mind that the cakes had to be completely neutral, because it was the pink cake inside that was going to spill the beans. I decided to go with a bird theme, complete with mommy, daddy and big brother  bird, and a little nest of eggs.
