Fancy Fingers

Finally, some summer weather! It reached a balmy 31 degrees here today, and I was lucky enough to have the day off, so I actually got to enjoy some of it. But I find one drawback to summer is that I get a little lazier as far as my appearance goes. It's too hot to use a blow dryer or curling iron so my hair suffers. I don't feel like wearing anything other than breezy shorts and t shirt, so I probably look like a 13 year old. And obviously if I'm not investing any time into picking my clothes, I'm sure as heck not worrying about accessories. But I have found the ultimate solution. Fabulously painted nails. You paint them once, and you have an awesome accessory that you don't have to remember to take on or off, it lasts for at least a week, and if you happen to get sick of it sooner it's super easy to get rid of. Here are a few of the patterns that I'll definitely be trying this summer.

 Fun sparkly polka dots

 Aren't those bows the cutest?

Cupcakes! This is one of my favorites. Very fitting considering I work in a cupcake shop

Leopard print in punchy summer colors

This one seems simple compared to some of the others, but grey paired with pastels is one of my favorite color combinations lately, and I thought the stripes and the heart were a sweet touch

So everyone get painting

Sunday Sweets

I'm happy to report that this week was much more subdued and calm than last week. Such a treat after the gong show that it's been lately. However we do have 7 wedding cake for this weekend, so while everyone else is out enjoying Canada Day on Friday, I'll be cooped up decorating  wedding cakes to make someone's special day, that much extra special. In the mean time, here are a few of this weeks creations.

The little blue box, every girls dream

A parting gift for a special 3rd grade teacher

I never get sick of fun flowers in bright colors

For a super cute little boy that loves tractors

One of the weeks wedding cakes. I love the sugar flowers and the pained silver swirls, which are hard to make out in the picture.

Have a great weekend!

Picnic Perfect

Finally, my internet is working again! It's been 3 days, and as sad as it is to admit, I was dying without it. But now it's fixed, and all is well. Things are better than well. Effective yesterday, it's officially summer! And it reached a sizzling 26 degrees today! Sooo nice. Even though I was stuck inside all day, and didn't get to enjoy it. Even so, I can't wait for more gorgeous weather that is supposed to be headed my way.

I'm going to be honest. I went shopping. I know I wasn't supposed to. It started as me going to the mall to return a shirt I bought almost a month ago, and decided I didn't love. And I marched into that store, aiming right for the cash register. And then a lovely white eyelet dress caught my eye. And then a really cute navy blue tank top, that had red polka dots. But they weren't polka dots, they were little hearts! Have I mentioned that I have a weakness for eyelets and polka dot hearts? Well needless to say, I went to town. And I am ashamed. But I did end up returning 2 of the 5 items that I bought. So that makes it better. Right? One of the things that I loved, that I didn't buy, was a little plaid romper. Probably the cutest thing ever. But do you know who can wear rompers? Or a pattern like plaid on their rear end? Hardly any one. So I left that little lovely in the store. But it did reignite my love for plaid, which I personally, find very summery. Here are a few of my favorite recent plaid finds.

I love this simple little shirt dress, so easy to throw on and go

A bright and summery blue checked dress

Pink! Again, this seems like such an easy shirt to just throw on with a pair of cut offs, and still look super cute and summery
I love patterned shoes, probably because I don't own any. It took a lot of will power not to order these puppies. They were on sale. But I resisted

Loooove. Lately I've rekindled my love for hair accessories. Probably because I've been too lazy to really do my hair. If I put a really cute flower in my messy hair, that makes my hair cute too. At least that's my logic.

Sunday Sweets

This week has been crazy. I'm fairly sure that how I start every Sunday Sweets post, but this week I really mean it. This week we had 56 cakes. 34 on Saturday alone, and 18 of them were wedding cakes. And 5 of those wedding cakes were half slabs. Just saying the word half slab can't convey how truly huge and awful they are. They are 15 pounds of pure evil. See for yourself.

That's a ton of cake. Luckily, everything went pretty smoothly, and I survived the mass amounts of cakes. Here are a few of my favorites.

This was a fun and sparkly first birthday cake. Pink, polka dotted and topped off with a bow. All my favorites.

Alright, this cake was way more impressive in real life. They wanted a damask-esque type pattern, with accents of lime green. Darn my crappy photography skills.

Speaking of crappy photography skills, no I'm not completely awful, I just don't care that I cut off Rapunzel's head. I hate plastic toys on cakes. They are the result of people who are cheap and don't want to pay for a fondant figure, which would have looked way better. Regardless, I think the tower turned out cute.

This was one of the wedding cakes. It was so nice to have at least one little one like this. The couple was having a small, backyard BBQ wedding, and the groom is a referee, so the black and white stripes are nod to him.

This one is for my little brother. Nothing like a little Grave Digger to round out the day!

That's all for this week my dears. Hope you have a fantastic rest of the weekend!

Swimsuit Season

It's undeniable, the most dreaded of all the seasons is here, whether you're ready or not. Swimsuit season. I'll admit I'm a little better prepared this year than years previous. Even so, it's daunting. And in my opinion swimsuit shopping is up there with shopping for jeans and bras. Not too fun. You can literally try on 50 things, and maybe 2 or 3 actually look good and fit right. There's also the issue with fitting rooms. They honestly have THE most unflattering light imaginable, so you look crappy, no matter what. You also can't get a really good look at yourself either, from different angles and distances. Because trust me, when you're at the pool or beach, people aren't just going to be looking at you straight on, when you're slightly sucking in your tummy, and have your leg positioned just so. Don't deny it, because we all do it. So you need to take a good long look at yourself from every angle, because other people are going to be too. I, personally now completely forgo trying swimsuits on in fitting rooms. Instead, I've taken to ordering online, in several different styles, colors and sizes, and then enjoy being able to try them on in the comfort of my own home. It works for me, but if you enjoy the full in-store shopping experience, by all means, continue. Here are a few of the suits that have caught my eye this season.

There's nothing I love more than polka dots, especially in this lovely shade of tangerine

Polka dots AND ruffles, even better!

I thought the little rosettes were sweet, and the straps are removable, if you want to avoid tan lines

A very bright and fun floral print, perfect for the summer

My mom is going to be so mad I included this suit lol. I wanted to buy it when we went to Hawaii in February, but she said absolutely not, it's not modest. Which is probably true. But I love it nonetheless. I think the cutouts are just so nifty. And  I have a thing for cool tan lines. Don't worry mom, I'm not actually considering buying this one!

Happy Monday!

Sunday Sweets

What a crazy week. Lots of people canceling orders, people switching their cake date, mysterious extra cakes being baked... Just bizarre. Also our new walk in cooler is too humid to keep decorated cakes in, our dishwasher broke, and the freezer isn't freezing right. Such a mess. But this week was awesome nonetheless, for reasons I wont bore you with. I didn't have a chance to take too many pictures of the cakes that I made, but here are a few.

 A cake for a 60th birthday party

What's that you say? There's a ton of stuff going on with this cake? Ya, I think so too. Nothing like a huge cake covered in zebra, with stars and a huge bow

This was for a block party to say goodbye to some neighbors that were moving to Poland, so we decided to make a vintage inspired suitcase

This goofy pair is from the book series Super Diper Baby

Have a fabulous rest of the weekend!

Uninspired

I have been feeling extremely uninspired lately. When it comes to my blog, my cake decorating, and especially when I get dressed in the morning. I love shopping. I would do it every day if I had the money. But I never seem to be satisfied with what I have. When I buy something new, I feel the need to wear it immediately, because everything else in my wardrobe dulls in comparison to my shiny new purchase. But after being worn once, or maybe twice, it's just another item in my closet, and I feel the need to go shopping and buy something new, because "I have nothing to wear". It's been especially bad lately, because I ordered a few things off the internet, and they're all I can think about when I go to get dressed. I went on a date last night, and I stared at the contents of my closet for a good long time, totally at a loss, because nothing was as cute as that red shirt that is on its way to me.
Well my friends, it's time to break that cycle. I've made vows like this before, but this time I'm really going to try to stick to it. I'm not going to go shopping for a while. Instead, I'm going to shop my closet, and try to be satisfied with what I have. Easier said than done, I know. But we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

Sunday Sweets

I love days like today. Gorgeous weather, lots of time spent outside with the fam, and strawberry shortcake to round things out. Exactly what I needed after an absolute gong show of a day yesterday. Having said that, I didn't have a chance to take pictures of very many cakes yesterday. Not even the super cute black and white Chanel purse cake that I made, which makes me want to cry a little bit. Oh well. I promise this week I will be more diligent. In the mean time, here are the pics that I did manage to get.

 A 50's themed cake for a 50th birthday

This Tinkerbell-esque fairy went on top of a little turtle shaped cake, which I obviously didn't get a picture of.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Summer Forecast

It's June! Where in the world is time going? Do you know what the start of a new month means? New magazines on the news stands. I'm willing to admit that I love magazines of all sorts, from the Auto Trader to Martha Stewart. Yesterday I went to the drugstore, specifically to get Q Tips, and the new Nivea deodorant, the one that promises to leave your black clothes streak free, and not leave yellow stains under the arms of your white clothes. I ended up at the checkout with 3 magazines. Two of which were fashion magazines (the other was The Farmers Almanac. It's a guilty pleasure).
The pages were filled with celebrities, and the latest fashion trends for the summer. And celebrities wearing the latest trends for the summer. Here are a few that you can either take, or leave. I for one will be leaving them.

Apparently white is really big this summer. Apparently Gaga took it to heart. But that's ok, she was born this way baby. Another big trend as far as white goes, is white jeans. Do you know who's butt looks good in white jeans?! About 1% of the population. Sad, but true.

High waisted, flared jeans a' la the 70's are back full force. Hard to pull off, but it can be done. Solange got the pants part right, she just forgot to put anything on up top.

Knotted shirts are evidently really big this season too. This one was news to me. How do you pull off this look without showing a lot of skin, and looking a little Daisy Duke? I'm still trying to figure that one out.

This look is a little too cowboy vs indian for me. There is a reason the two groups never got along in the past. They still haven't worked out their differences.

So there you have it! A few little tips to keep cool this summer!
